For the last summer reading, I have picked The weight of Lies a psychological thriller written by Emily Carpenter.I was drawn by the book’s cover and premise. A set of family drama, crime, and suspense. Let's make it into sections : First the Plot: Megan Ashley is a young lady who cut ties with her mom, she’s been living on her own for three years far from her mother’s successful life. Their last encounter was a dispute that made Megan run away from home. Her mother aka Frances Ashley is a famous writer who became successful thanks to her horror novel “Kitten”. The story starts with Megan receiving an invitation to her mother’s birthday. Feeling trapped in her mother's life and wanting to break free from it, she decides to write a tell-all book about her relationship with her mother and the behind scenes of her mother’s success. She first digs her mother’s past and that leads her to” Bonny” island where the rest of the events would be unraveled. A crime that happened long ago but no actual culprit had been found, and the similarity of the case with the events in "kitten" makes it even more intriguing. Who is the killer after all? The story is uniquely told with a book within a book, you get to read excerpts of the bestseller “Kitten” interspersed through the main narrative. It gave a background to the actual story. Secondly the characters, you may hate some of them and you may sympathize with others, but they are all suspicious, unreliable and complex making the story even more enjoyable. The fast pacing of the story added to the suspense and kept me glued to the pages for 3 days. Hope I didn't spoil the whole thing but If I did that won't make the story any less enjoyable. The writing style and the atmosphere are good enough to encourage you to finish the book.
Hope you enjoy it .
