“I will be stronger than my sadness.”
At the beginning of September I was scrolling through Instagram, I found a post about suicide, and that September was national awareness month on USA. So why not doing a review about a book that talked about it.
Aysel, a sixteen year old nerd physics teenager, is obsessed with planning her own death. She can’t take it anymore, especially with classmates who look at her in a wrong way, wispering behind her back, a mother who can’t look at her anymore, and the main cause is her father who is known as a criminal, and whose crime turned the city upside down. But she is not sure she is ready to commit suicide herself. So she discovers a website about finding a suicide partner. She met Frozenrobot, a teenage basketball famous guy, also known by the name of Roman, who also suffers from severe depression due to a family tragedy. We follow the two teenagers planning their suicide. But as they make progress about their plan, Aysel starts to doubt herself, and instead of killing herself, why not try to live and save Roman as well. So, no more talking :p
Where do I begin ? This story was so hard to read, not because of the writting or the story itself, despite that it is so beautiful, but because of the darkness surrounding the main characters. When Aysel was talking about her dad, her desire to die, it was so painful reading about her. No one should pay for someone’s mistakes. Seeing her getting judge for her father’s crimes was unfair, but most of all not having anyone to talk to, or just someone telling her to ask for help, to consult a psychiatrist. And Roman story was sore, blaming himself for a family tragedy. You can feel his pain through his paragraphs. And what was irritating was his friends not noticing anything.
The main subject of the novel is suicide, but above all how you can prevent it. Talking, asking for help is the main treatment.
And through the story, we’ve seen Aysel getting doubt about committing suicide, and that after telling Roman about her problems, and how she’s feeling. Seeing her battling depression was warming.
A wonderful novel, where Jasmine Warga did an exceptional job by describing depression, and how it can impact a person. So please, Aysel and Roman are just a representation of many teenagers living the same situation as theirs. And we can prevent depression, because most of the time it’s due to people. Bullying, rape, judgment, regret… can all cause depression. And if you know someone having depression’s symptoms, talk to them. You don’t know how much talking can make a person feel better.
Finally, if you’re having suicide thoughts, or you know someone suicidal, go check with a psychiatrist.
So what did you think of the book ? and do you know any books dealing with mental health issues ? I would like to know about your recommandations.
