“It takes eight to ten hours to hand-dig a grave, more if you was doing it in the dark, five to six if you have a helper. It aint like the movies.”
Being a huge fan of thrillers, I try to read one of them each month. September was the month when I read “We are all the same in the Dark” by Julia Heberlin. Let me start by specifying that this is my first book of hers, and it kind of gave me a good impression about her writing. Then we can start the review :p
This book talks about two mysteries surrounding two girls, Trumanell who I missing for a long time ago, and a young teenage girl who was found on the road, not knowing what happened to her, her past… The story is divided into three parts: The first one is narrated by Wyatt, a 26 year old man who is the prime suspect in the disappearance of his sister Trumanell. Everyone in his town believes that he has a direct link with the mystery of his sister, apart from Odette, a young detective with whom he is friends and who was also the friend of his sister. Wyatt is also the person that will find the teenage girl on the road, and who will name her “Angel” since she was mute.
The second part is recounted by Odette, the youngest cop in Texas, who was really connected to Trumanell and still investigating her disappearance. She is approached by Wyatt to help him solve the mystery of Angel. Odette has a history with Wyatt, they actually dated before Trumanell disappears, but they were torn apart due to an accident, a night of violence where Odette lost her leg. But when Wyatt reached to her, she didn’t say no, especially when she met Angel. She will do everything she can to help her, which will cost her badly.
The last part is tailed by Angel, 5 years after being found in the middle of the road. An important detail that I didn’t mention earlier, she has one eye. During the story, she was referred as the one eye girl. This is the part that will reveal the ending, one I didn’t see coming!
At first, I did struggle with this book. I found it difficult to understand the story, and I think I’m not the only one, a lot of reviews thought the same. Especially the first part, I was reading the second part not knowing exactly what happened in the first one :p If you’re not into creepy, nerve bending and slow-burn mysteries, this book is not for you :p It really need your patience, probably reading the first part more than once, but when you’ll find yourself in the middle of the book, you’ll absolutely want to finish it. The ending was EPIC I can assure you that :p
Would I recommend it? YES. Be patient and you’ll be blown at the ending. Will I read another book of Julia Heberlin? Without a doubt. She has quite a selection, and I will never say no to more thrillers :p
Have you read this book? What are your thoughts about it?
