"Mythos" by Stephen Fry: Review:

“For the world seems never to offer anything worthwhile without also providing a dreadful opposite.”

This book was on my radar for so long, especially after I bought Heroes and couldn’t read it because I didn’t have the first book. Greek mythology fascinates me, and I’m always in the mood to read books about it, whether it’s a fiction, fantasy, or just a Greek Mythology retelling.

Mythos is written by the well-known award-winning actor and comedian Stephen Fry. He tried, through his book, to simplify the Greek mythology, and to immerse us into the thinking and the imagination of the Greek. From the creation of Gods to the creation of humans, through all the myths we’ve heard about, this book is a complete introduction to the Greek mythology. We get to know the difference between Titans and Gods, how Zeus was born, how he became the God of Gods, but also the birth of Athena which was mind-blowing by the way, the story of all the Gods, their sons and daughters, the half Gods half humans.

Thank god I bought the second book just for its cover :p, it made me discover one of my favourite reads of 2021 (I’ve said that in a lot of reviews, my top 10 of 2021 will be so hard :p) If you’re looking for a great introduction to the Greek mythology, this one is definitely for you. Stephen Fry tries to explain the Greek mythology with fluent writing, funny and so easy to read, that you can’t find yourself lost in all the myths, and believe me, there are a LOT. I enjoyed diving into the myths, remembering some and learning others I didn’t know about. The birth of Athena will always fascinate me, and is one of my favourite myths. One thing that didn’t change is how I hated and I still hate Zeus: p He’s the God of Gods yes, but he’s a pervert. There isn’t a single Goddess or Woman or creature he didn’t bed her. And his Wife Hera, she wasn’t blaming her husband! Which led to so many cruel things she did. This is a book showing us how Greeks explained a lot of natural events, and immersing us into their imagination, which is fascinating.

To all the Greek mythology lovers, this one's for you! Read it, and try to enjoy it as much as you can. It’s an easy five stars. Stephen Fry also wrote Heroes, Troy and I heard he was releasing a fourth Greek mythology retelling called The Odyssey. No need to tell that I’m going to read them all: p
